Back in harness and looking forward to a great year for the paper and the city.

Happy New Year. Back in harness after Christmas/New Year. I like CHristmas but hate the mess. I love to take the decorations down as well as put them up.
Pleased to get exclusive last week on first major Cap of Cult event - Treasures of China's Forbidden City. Nice One.
Big stories around on other days too. Nice to start with a strong sales performance. Will know by Wednesday.
Can't help admiring Pete Price the Radio City presenter. Left his show to go to the aid of a caller who, it tuned out, had died whilst on air. Pete really does care. No wonder he has such a following. Must sit down for proper chat with him soon.
Big, big year this. Can't wait for the Met Quarter to open. Grosvenor in 08 and Met quarter will make Liverpool a genuine shopping destination to add to ever-improving bar/restaurant scene.
Echo needs to grow in the same way - be more confident, be bold and modern.
Kids back at school this week. Bought two pairs of shoes for the 3-year-old. £48. Her feet are tiny. How could it have cost £48? Lynne just scowled at me and said : 'That's what shoes cost' like I was an idiot.

I'm Alastair Machray, editor of the Liverpool Echo. I believe, I truly believe, it's Britain's best paper in Britain's best city. And I'm so proud to be here.

After 26 years is the business I'm happier than ever. Every morning I jump out of bed looking forward to work (well, mostly). Home? It's a war zone.
