Fogged off; jon brown; videocasts; strange lunch.

Managed to shift a whole pile of backlogged work on Wednesday. With Daily Post editor jane was on way to London for Trinity Mirror Editors Forum but flight cancelled from JLA due to fog at London City.
Sorry to miss meeting, and sorry to miss out on catching up with fellow editors. However, great to have a clear day in the diary for sorting out the raft of tasks that were struggling to get done. Nice to sit and talk to Jane too. Just few yards away in office, but never get chance for much discourse. Caught up in airport lounge and put world to rights.
Jane's husband JOn Brown, said his goodbyes today. After five and a half years at The Echo he's off to run his own PR business and we'll miss him greatly. Was great deputy editor and acting editor of Echo before I arrived and would have made a great permanent editor.
Looking at Jon always reminds me how lucky I am to have this job. Jon is a real pro - a fabulous and unflinchingly honest journalist who commands enormous respect around the office. He will, I am sure be a great success in his own business. Left him in the Cross Keys pub across from the office and hour ago. Well into his fourth or fifth pint. Long night ahead.
I'm off to Mersey Toursim Awards which we're helping stage for the Mersey Partnership. Interesting night ahead but been staying off booze lately so won't have a glass of wine to make it more interesting still. Keen to lose a few pounds in time for hospital appointment. Will get savaged by cardiac people if my weight isn't right.
My friend and colleague John Griffith in Ireland on fantastic Press golf trip this weekend. I had to cancel due to work pressures. Hope they raise a glass to me, but don't suppose they will. John's been going for years as have many of the journos and our hosts,, Irish Toursim and Irish Ferries make it a wonderful trip. A truly wonderful trip.
I hope they run out of Guinness and John shoots 110 every round.
Morgan aged 3 is at reception class at school npow and seems very happy. Not that you'd know through talking to her. Can't get a thing out of her about school. Try talking to her about ponies and she won't shut up.
Me: ''How was school?'' Silence.
Me: ''What did you do at school today.'' Silence.
Me: ''Do you have any friends among the little girls at school.
Morgan: 'Yes.'
Me: ''Great! What are their names?'' Silence.
Me: Go on, what are thei little girls' names?''
Morgan: ''Harry and George.'' (Her brother and his best mate).
Me (trying a different tack): What did you have for lunch today?''
Morgan: ''A squirrel.''
Me: ''Don't be silly. What did you have for lunch today?''
Morgan: 'Pasta'.
Me (hurrah, getting somewhere!): ''Pasta! That's lovely. You like pasta. What did you have with the pasta?''
Morgan: 'A crocodile.'

Where did I leave that gin bottle?

I'm Alastair Machray, editor of the Liverpool Echo. I believe, I truly believe, it's Britain's best paper in Britain's best city. And I'm so proud to be here.

After 26 years is the business I'm happier than ever. Every morning I jump out of bed looking forward to work (well, mostly). Home? It's a war zone.
