Nov 21 New waterfront Friends

New vision of Liverpool waterfront. Kindness of friends

At private viewing of the city's Mann Island waterfront developments last night. Liverpool Vision hosted the evening at the Maritime Museum when guests were able to see a fascinating and model of the scheme.

It provided splendid context and for the first time I was able to see how the 'X' Museum and the new apartment and leisure blocks fitted into the scheme of things.

I have little time for those who claim the new buildings are in some way inappropriate from an architectural point of view.

In this day and age it isn't feasible or desirable to build something in the image of the Three Graces.

The old and the new must sit side by side and there are plenty of examples worldwide of how they can do so successfully.

The new buildings are modern and different but in my opinion they will complement the Three Graces beatuifully.

The waterfront will become more than 'instantly recognisable'. It will become a major visitor attraction replete in both beauty and in recreational, retail and residential facilities. Bring it on.

Lynne and I were touched in the extreme by the kindness of so many people with regard to her MS diagnosis. Yesterday brought flowers, kind words, expressions of hope and promises of support.

They made a huge difference to her outlook. From our hearts, thanks to everyone.

I'm Alastair Machray, editor of the Liverpool Echo. I believe, I truly believe, it's Britain's best paper in Britain's best city. And I'm so proud to be here.

After 26 years is the business I'm happier than ever. Every morning I jump out of bed looking forward to work (well, mostly). Home? It's a war zone.
