November 6 2006 Relapse

Relapse Capital of Culture

It would be easy to blame the upheaval of the week, Doug's death, Lynne's illness, but I won't pretend it was anything other than weak will which let me have a couple of drinks over the weekend.

On the plus side I managed to drink moderately and sensibly, and the knowledge that I managed 13 days on the wagon without feeling twitchy is quite comforting.

I'll aim to stay off alcohol during the week whilst avoiding the obvious trap of bingeing at weekends.

Had some lovely emails and cards following Doug's death. Much appreciated.

Work is frantic, with much focus on the Capital of Culture 2008 programme announcement tonight. Pleased to get a head start with the huge televised Nativity story in tonight's Echo. 12-page supplement tomorrow. Am hoping people love the programme. There is much riding on it for Liverpool's future.

Took Morgan to a pal's birthday party at 'Funky Monkey' in Chester yesterday. Kids soft play apparatus, that sort of thing.

After two hours reading my paper it was home time. Morgan thought otherwise. At the first mention she turned and fled back into the bowels of the climbing frame and ball pit complex.

No sign. Eventually Lynne had to take her shoes off, crawl in, find her and haul her out.

Morgan plays deaf the moment I issue any kind of instruction she doesn't fancy. Can't remember Harry being like that.

Do little girls behave differently?

I'm Alastair Machray, editor of the Liverpool Echo. I believe, I truly believe, it's Britain's best paper in Britain's best city. And I'm so proud to be here.

After 26 years is the business I'm happier than ever. Every morning I jump out of bed looking forward to work (well, mostly). Home? It's a war zone.
