Lunch with murder queen, war zone

Fun lunch at Piccolinos with Joy Swift and Ken Pye, along with our marketing manager Andy Cook. Working on a new intitative for next year and promises to be fun.

Joy writes murder mysteries and Ken is a walking enyclopaedia on Liverpool's history. Both tremendous talkers and a hugely creative session with three people for whom ideas come at about the rate of ten a second.

More on that later. Ken and Joy are both publishing books through the Echo and our expansion into books publishing is proving very successful.

Laughs back at office. (Always is). Asked newsdesk for '10 things you didn't know about X Factor's Raymond'. Someone went onto Wikipedia and found references to his being a Holocaust revisionist who sings at BNP fundraisers. Total nonsense of course but immense fun. (In case you're reading Raymond, we know it's rubbish and the Echo is right behind you for victory on Saturday). That's the thing about Wikipedia -anyone can post anything and fact and fiction are liberally mixed.

Home? Nightmare. Lynne flat out after steroid treatment. Morgan laid low by chicken pox. Like a hospital ward in the Crimea in our house. Here's a pic of she and I - note the spots which we're trying desperately to stop her scratching. Ideas welcome.

Have had to cancel some evening engagements to help out. Hope people understand.

I'm Alastair Machray, editor of the Liverpool Echo. I believe, I truly believe, it's Britain's best paper in Britain's best city. And I'm so proud to be here.

After 26 years is the business I'm happier than ever. Every morning I jump out of bed looking forward to work (well, mostly). Home? It's a war zone.
