Alan Ball, LIverpool Arena and Conference Centre

We found out the great Alan Ball had died at about 7.50am yesterday. By 9.35am we'd turned round seven pages of news, views and tributes.

My journalists are at their best when they are up against it. Adrenaline kicks in and the pace at which people work is astonishing.

But at times likes this, what also kicks in is a determination to get things right, to provide excellent and fitting coverage of a major news event.

Every word, no matter how quickly it had to be chosen, was chosen with thought and sensitivity.

In the newsroom Reds and Blues alike were shocked, upset, yet in top gear to produce the right paper.

And last night someone emails me to say why did we give front page coverage to a 'no-mark footballer'. Can you believe that?

Took an hour to attend the topping-out ceremony at the Liverpool Arena and Conference Centre.

Truly amazing when you set foot inside the main auditorium as it nears completion.

It will be an iconic building and a major addition to what Liverpool has to offer.

I'm Alastair Machray, editor of the Liverpool Echo. I believe, I truly believe, it's Britain's best paper in Britain's best city. And I'm so proud to be here.

After 26 years is the business I'm happier than ever. Every morning I jump out of bed looking forward to work (well, mostly). Home? It's a war zone.
