july 7 2007 Summer Pops

Summer Pops/Cameron/Esther

Lurched from one meeting to another but a fascinating day yesterday.

Tory leader came into the office for a chat and I must admit to being mightily impresses. He's wowed everyone the night before at the CBI dinner in Liverpool and he's a high-quality act.

He and I had 20 minutes together, but it was anough to forma view that he was bright as a button, incredibly dtermined and tough as old boots.

If he's the face of the new Conservative Party then maybe there's a chance of an effective party of opposition after all.

And I defy anyone to say we don't need one to run a country effciciently.

Democracy works best when the party of government are having to make the right decisions for fear of being booted out.

Cameron talked with passion and authority about Liverpool and his seemingly hopeless quest to make headway in a city where he has no local councillors and no MPs.

He honed in like a lazer on the hot issue of grot spots and street filth. Nobod'y mug, this guy.

And he was good fun too; cheerfully doing and interview for our new Echo TV station, answering all sorts of daft questions.

I liked him.

Last meting of the day was another Tory - Wirral West's gorgeous Esther McVey who came to talk to me about a TV idea she has based around internet connectivity. Always fun listening to someone who talks and thinks faster than people like me can hear and process.

Took my mate Bob Bennett, who manages Allied Irish Bank in Liverpool to the Sumer Pops to see Steely Dan.

Bob is a huge music fan - knows the names of the horn players - that sort of bollocks.

I was quite looking forward to it. 'Will they play 'All Around My Hat?' I asked hopefully as we had dinner beforehand.

'That's Steeleye Span you dickhead,' he explained helpfully ' This is STEELY DAN.'

I enjoyed it anyway.

I'm glad your meeting with Cameron was positive, I think once he's found his feet he will be a force to reckon with, I just hope he can ditch all the old Tory stereotype stuff, his general attitude makes Gordon Brown look like an old school conservative to me, it certainly is time for change. I really look forward to Cameron modernising his party he seems like the only one who could possibly pull it off

Ali Machray writes: I did make the point to Cameron that a rebranding might be necessary - that Liverpool associated Conservatism with Thatcher attack on traditional industries and always would. He was evasive on that.
