So there I was in Sainsbury's car park....

Just got Lynne home after her first dose of chemotherapy. She's wiped out and lying on the couch. Can't leave her on her own for long but need to get kids something for tea.

Harry had sat in car to listen to sports news on radio. Came into Sainsbury's a few moments later. ''Car keys?' I say, holding out my hand. 'Oh shit,' he says.

So we're locked out of the car.

The phone rings. It's John Thompson, Echo sports editor, telling me one of my best guys has put his notice in and is going to the News of the World. Sickener.

Phone rings again. It's the BBC wanting to do an interview about poor Rhys Jones. I'm working from home but still trying to edit Britain's biggest regional newspaper through the biggest story in years.

Morgan's tugging at my shirt. 'Dad, dad, dad - I've stood in dog poo'.

Phone rings again. It's a pal who asks why I haven't updated my blog for a while.

Well. Let me think....

Nice to be back though.

Echo Editor

I'm Alastair Machray, editor of the Liverpool Echo. I believe, I truly believe, it's Britain's best paper in Britain's best city. And I'm so proud to be here.

After 26 years is the business I'm happier than ever. Every morning I jump out of bed looking forward to work (well, mostly). Home? It's a war zone.
