Sept 14 2007 08 excitement, Lynne

Easy to knock stuff as a newspaper editor. Sometimes you have to, often in fact. And usually you do it for the right reasons - because something is bad and publicising it and criticising it could make it improve.

08 has had its detractors and we've actively and I hope fairly, covered the anger and fall-out from the Mathew Street Festival cancellation.

But yesterday I sat down to write a speech I'm giving to a business lunch in North Wales. And I began to list the good things that are happening in Liverpool. The Liverpool One development, The Slavery Museum, the MetQuarter. The new watefront museum, the Liner terminal, the Liverpool Echo Arena, the new Anfield Stadium. All that and more before you BEGIN to look at the 08 programme.

Say what you like - this city is in great shape and moving forwards at a hell of a rate. Doom and gloom merchants please take note.

Lynne! At last some progress. Yesterday was her best day for weeks and she was feeling ok when I left the house at 6.30am today.

Yesterday she WALKED up the street a little way (helped by her dad). Last night she DROVE to the video shop.

Three days ago she couldn't stagger to the loo.

We're not getting too excited - chemotherapy is a long haul not a quick fix. But we'll enjoy a good day when it comes along.

I'm Alastair Machray, editor of the Liverpool Echo. I believe, I truly believe, it's Britain's best paper in Britain's best city. And I'm so proud to be here.

After 26 years is the business I'm happier than ever. Every morning I jump out of bed looking forward to work (well, mostly). Home? It's a war zone.
