November 22. England, Est Est Est. Strange way to watch a football match
I'm angry. I was sad, empty, after England's pitiful surrender to Croatia last night. But I'm not today. I'm furious.
Furious at the way an uninspiring manager was appointed to carry the hopes of a proud nation. Steve McClaren deserves the push and so do the people who appointed him.
I had committed to attend a dinner hosted by Radio City's suave Chief Exec Richard Maddox at which he planned to update us on CityTalk, the new station due to launch in January.
Calamitously it collided with the England showdown but city PR Carolyn Hughes moved heaven and earth and sorted out a big screen next to our table.
I was sat between Police Assistant Chief Constable Helen King and new Liverpool One Chief Executive Joanne Jennings. Both were delightful and fascinating company and took my mind off the tragedy being played out over my left shoulder.
It was a strange way to watch a match. Richard spoke briefly, and well about City's aspirations -at half time!
Conversations were punctuated by gasps and cheers as the serious business of regeneration gave way to the seriously depressing business on the screen.
Got home late to a sad Harry. Came in to an angry office this morning. Funny how a few hours changes the mood of a nation.
Where did you watch it? How do you feel?

Howard Kendall, to fans last night at the Adelphi for an Everton do':
"You're sat here with your heroes - connecting with them. Your kids will never get that chance in the future ..."
says it all for me - too far gone now.
