jan 15 2008 opening (2)

THEY were never going to please all of the people all of the time. The Culture Opening ceremonies take a bit of a pasting today.

First in line is Scouse rapper RiUvEn who performed on Saturday night.

Greg Murphy describes is a 'huge blunder.'

'Four months after Rhys Jones' murder, tell me how does a rapper boasting about "gonna f**** kill someone" and car crime - the whole rap-menu basically - get a major ticket to highlight the city's culture?

'The broadcast of this "artist" on BBC2 Sunday night made us a laughing stock.'

Come on then, Nige;l Jamieson and Jayne Casey, opening ceremony producers. Come on the Culture Company. Why did you let this young man loose on the world?

Greg wasn't the only one to get stuck into the rapper. We took several calls at the Echo and I've heard the same feedback from pals.

The Echo Arena itself though seems to be a starring act, Tony Ellis praises the wheelchair access while Alan says the arena is 'just fantastic'.

Alan though, tears into Friday's event, calling it a terrible anti-climax and syas there were no 'I was there' moments.

What do you think?

The scouse rapper was a major embarrassment. He is actually a parody act but his inclusion on the bill, quite frankly, showed the event to be small time. The whole evening had an almost 'butlins-esque' quality to it. Despite how shockingly bad the rapper was, he still shone amongst this dated and irrelevant line up, and it is he who will profit from the event the most. I feel a little less proud to be scouse after this weekends events. I genuinely feel that we embarrassed ourselves.

The rapper was a spoof on the scouse stereotype, wasn't he?

Lyrics about smoking skunk, screwing the dole and the classic "Alright la, I'll rob you car" - if that's not the scouse version of Goldie Lookin Chain, I don't know what is.

Take your point Tom - and I considered that angle originally and that few things are considered beyond parody (Mel Brooks/Hitler etc).

But even if you credit RiUvEn with the artistic guile to attempt parody (which I don't) then you have to admit he made it too ambiguous to detect (unlike Brooks et al).

And as you correctly say, GLC's already been there.

In any case, the lad's myspace clearly suggests that this isn't parody...but he'll obviously keep that as a convenient defence if "duhs" like me fail to "connect".

Last word to you if you want. Cheers.
