Jan 9 2008 New York..Culture..

Right pasting from 'Sue' who accuses me of desertion for leaving for New York on New Year's Day - the first day of Liverpool's tenue as European Capital of Culture.
Sue goes on to describe 08 as an 'over-hyped non event' and the Echo's coverage of it as 'tedious and turgid'.
Happy New Year Sue!
First off, if I choose to take a holiday in Culture Year then perhaps the best time to take it is before Friday's opening ceremony? And I spent half the time there telling people to get over to Liverpool during 08.
Secondly Sue, if you view 08 as a non-event then anything you read about it you are bound to see as dull.
Stick with it - don't write it off on January 9.
New York was, you'll be disappointed to hear, Sue, great fun. But I'm back at my desk and hugely excited about the next 12 months.

Jo cites the Sultan's Palace in Victoria Street as Liverpool's top curry house after my take-it-or-leave-it experience at Mayur. Good call Sue, I've eaten there three or four times and it's always been excellent.
Zeds defends Mayur and lauds its food. I'll definitely give it another try.
Anyone tried The Spice Club at Moreton on Wirral? Unsung hero, I reckon.

I'm Alastair Machray, editor of the Liverpool Echo. I believe, I truly believe, it's Britain's best paper in Britain's best city. And I'm so proud to be here.

After 26 years is the business I'm happier than ever. Every morning I jump out of bed looking forward to work (well, mostly). Home? It's a war zone.
