Sept 8 2008 10 things to do before I die

Posted by Alastair Machray on September 8, 2008 8:00 PM |

I've been thinking about this for some time. On available stats, given that I've had open heart surgery, I have about 10 years left....(I'm rather hoping to push that bit, as you can imagine!)

I've left out the ones involving Catherine Zeta Jones on the grounds that this a family blog and she might not play ball anyway. And I've left out one or two extraordinarily private ones.

1. See my children Harry and Morgan graduate
2. Watch a Test match abroad
3. Go to India
4. Go to Japan
5. See the Echo win UKPG regional newspaper of the year
6. See Newcastle United win a trophy (more chance of shagging Catherine Zeta)
7. Play golf off a single figure handicap
8. Get back to 11 stones
9.Play golf at every Open Championship venue in Britain
10. Celebrate my silver wedding with Lynne. (Only four years to go...)

I deliberately stayed off 'see world peace or a cure for cancer' as I could not bring any influence to bear).

What are yours? Or how pathetic are mine? Comments please.

Something makes me think your list should be 'Ten things to help me live longer!'

Do you want me to suggest a few?!

Alastair, first off ... congrats on posting your personal 10-things to do before YOU die.

50% of those personal seem to be easy pee, ones that you have real control over & can do without any real effort in 2, 3, 4, 8 & 10.

On number 1, no issues there-right?

I'm not so sure about 7 & 9, they seem a lot more difficult.

Number 6 had me thinking 'why did he put that one in', seeing that you're the editor of the scouser newspaper.

As for number 5, well what does it take to fulfill that dream?

Mine are quite simple-unselfishly

1. Plan to live to 100 years of age (big fish idea) & remain as happy contented and optimistic as I am today, taking it one day at a time & to be at peace with all humankind (even more than I am today if that’s possible).
2. Within the next 12-months-get rid of the telephone, the telly, car & credit cards ... I can manage to live without those things till the day that I die.
3. Tour the UK from one-end to the other & see what my country & my fellow country folk are all about.
4. Learn to fly a helicopter proficiently
5. Spend a summer doing on an archeological dig,
6. Spend a summer working in a kibbutz.
7. Pan for gold in the Yukon in the early spring
8. Camp out at the foothills of the Himalayas & visit a Buddhist monastery
9. Visit Stewart Island at the bottom end of New Zealand (get blathered on local brew)
10. Spend a year giving back by sharing my knowledge and experiences teaching in a remote location.
