Last night was a truly memorable experience.

The Echo and Alliance and Leicester Commercial Bank had commissioned an 8-person panel to find the 100 Greatest Mereseysiders of all time, a quest that will launch as series of Echo supplements and hopefully, enormous reader debate and interaction.

I joined the panel for dinner when their deliberations were complete. The list they have produced is fascinating and awe-inspiring. I felt humble to be editor of the newspaper that serves a city with so many extraordinary people featuring in its past and present.

In due course we will publish the complete list and feature an essay on each of the 100. I promise it will be a remarkable series.

At dinner, the panel, chaired by my Arts Editor Joe Riley, talked through the process for reaching their final list and spent time explaining the more controversial choices.

They could easily, they said, have made it the top 200. Liverpool is that sort of place.

I am hugely excited about this project and look forward to bringing it to you in the weeks ahead.

Managed to get home for an hour before dinner for Morgan's birthday tea. She was four yesterday. The excitement children manifest at occasions like this is so touching. She even kissed her brother, whom she normally reserves solely for punching.
